Today's blog en-tree...

So, you know how your horse is always trying to tell you that certain things are capable of eating them... like the crosswalk lines, or a puddle, or some such thing... well, today the Minis were right! It COULD have happened! LOL

We had two beautiful maple trees donated and placed in our biggest paddock to provide some shade for the Minis! It is quite a cool process to witness!

Just look at all of that wonderful shade already!

***These trees are NOT toxoic, don't worry. It is the Red Maple (acer rubrum) that is poisonous to horses, as well as some other types of common maples. The Red Maple is actually GREEN in the spring/summer. They can have gallic acid in the wilted leaves. Peach, plum and some other fruit trees (of the genus prunus) can have cyanide in the wilted leaves. Our paddocks are scooped daily and any fallen leaves will be removed, even though they are not toxic. The trees will have fences put around them to protect the bark and trunks. Thanks for your concern!

May... for reals.

Wow - it's May!

It's been a very busy week so far, that's for sure! We've had a lot of media attention lately, you can click here to see our newspaper articles and a clip from CTV News!

On Saturday we took Dash and Sky to their new home. The folks had picked Dash out in January, so they've been waiting and waiting for Sky's arrival so that they could bring them home once ready. The pair have started to settle in and are very much loved already!

Epic has gone home, truly. Frodo is just awaiting his ride and then he'll be heading up north as well, sometime this month. I'm going to miss the little guy - he's such a character!

Bilbo did indeed get Adopted and is doing just fabulous at his new home.

Cinnabar is still wowing us with his huge steps towards trusting humans. Yesterday was the first time I could groom his whole self in one go. He was actually enjoying the attention and wiggling his lips whenever an itchy spot was hit. There is white and chestnut hair drifting all across the Paddocks. LOL

Twilight is still live on camera. We are sprucing up the foaling stall this weekend and then she'll be able to move in. The camera will follow her, of course.

Magpie is doing fantastic. She's hanging out with Frodo and Cinnabar alternatly, growing stronger as she meanders and keeps the boys in line. LOL

Willow is coming back from her foster home tomorrow. They've done a fabulous job with her rehabilitation, but with so few in right now, we have plenty of room for her back here at the Paddocks again. Hopefully she'll have an easier time catching someone's eye if she's hanging around with the rest of the gang.

Cream and Sugar are still just around the corner at their foster home. Another couple of weeks and they'll be ready to be put up for Adoption.

Here is little Sky Wishes with her very own little girl. Photo: Raeleigh Good, Lark Rise Horse House

Spring is here!

Wow - what nice weather we've been having! The Minis are loving it, just so happy to be sunbathing and soaking up the sunshine! Rainbow Dash and little Sky Wishes spend their days outside. Sky is getting much braver and into much more mischief! LOL She sure keeps Dash on her toes!

Frodo and Epic are hanging out together, just waiting for their trailer rides to take them up north to their new homes.

It looks as though Bilbo will be heading to a new home this week! Just have to dot the i's and cross the t's and he'll be Adopted and on his way! He's such a super little guy, I'm glad that he's getting this terrific new home. He's going to be a buddy for an older gelding and a playmate for some future warmblood foals.

Cinnabar has had some major progress lately in his attitude. He's wanted to be friends with humans for quite some time now, but lately he's been approaching us and visitors all on his own and allowing himself to be handled voluntarily. It's a huge step in his journey to get past his abuse!

Starbright and Hula have both been Adopted by their foster homes! LOL Therein lies the danger of fostering the cuteness! Don't blame me! LOL

Twilight Sparkle is now on camera! I don't think she'll foal out until May at the earliest, but you can help us to watch her by clicking here.

Magpie had a big day! The vet gave her the all-clear to be let out of her small area! She now gets to be a real horse again! Her wounds are still healing, but they are solid and well covered now. PLUS, one of our volunteers is planning to Adopt her in June, once she's ready to go! She spends lots of time with her every week and so it's a great home with someone who's known her all along. Simply wonderful! There is a video of Magpie's healing journey on her "graphic" page you can get there through here.

Willow is still doing wonderfully at her foster home. She may be coming back here to the main facility soon if nothing new comes in before everyone else gets to go to their new homes. This is the lowest number of horses we've had in well over a year. The Adopters are really stepping up to the plate! Thank you so much everyone for spreading the word about Pipsqueak Paddocks!

We did have two new arrivals recently though. Cream and Sugar are a pair of Shetland sisters who are THE best kid's ponies I have ever met! We're still getting them up to snuff, but they are amazing with the little ones! They're fostered with a family around the corner and even the dad is impressed with them!

Here's Sugar and Cream.

Yes, some BIG little news!

Rainbow Dash has had her foal! We are happy to welcome "Sky Wishes" to this world!

Unfortunately, it didn't get recorded, but the birth went very smoothly.

Here's a quote from one live viewer... "I watched the birth. I have to say it was one of the most calm, professional births I've ever seen on MareStare. Dash did wonderfully, and little SkyWishes is just adorable! Well done Pipsqueak Paddocks and well done Dash!"

Our vet arrived moments after the little one had popped out. Dash did most of the work, but I did feel the need to apply a bit of holding pressure on the foal after the two feet and nose had appeared. Three sets of contractions later, out she came! She was up-and-at-em in no time flat! Dash is being a terrific mother!

You can view videos of Sky Wishes just after she's born, plus her first day out in the sunshine, as well as photos on her page here >>> Sky Wishes!

As far as everyone else is concerned... let's see...

Frodo is back here at our main facility, just getting the last of his boosters etc before he goes to his new home in May!

Magpie is doing fabulous. We're down to some small-change sized wounds. LOL Well, a toonie and a quarter anyways.

Cinnabar and Bilbo are rough-and-tumble friends... always doing something and getting up to no good! LOL

Hula, Willow and Starbright are still enjoying their foster homes.

Chaka and Honeysuckle have been Adopted! Honey left a few days ago and we're delivering Chaka tomorrow! We're also picking up two new faces on our way back, so stay tuned for more details!

AND, little miss Twilight took one look at Dash's foal and decided to start bagging up. We'll be swapping her into the camera stall pretty quick!

Wow... I'm dizzy!

Well, it's been a busy month for us here, with Mini stuff and other things as well!

So, let's get going through our list shall we?! Pippin is Adopted! As soon as one of our Foster Homes laid eyes on him, they snapped him right up. He has settled in beautifully there and is truly a different pony! He's very relaxed and seems to really like his big horse pals as well as little Starbright, who is being fostered there. She is doing excellent as well and seems to like having someone closer to her size to hang out with, though she still feels the need to keep the whole gang in line. LOL

Frodo has gone to hang out at a foster home and seems to enjoy interacting with his foster-brothers, George and Kooter. When we went to drop him off, I knew we were in the right neighbourhood when the "Adopt-A-Street" sign had George and Kooter's names on it! LOL

Applejack has been Adopted! She charmed some nice folks with a camera stall, foaling experience and a vet living on site. Can't get much better than that!

Dash and Twilight are ever-expanding and doing well. Dash is expected to foal by mid-April. I know, I know... I keep saying SOON. But really.... SOON!

Magpie is unwrapped! We've done the last of the bandages and now she just needs time, time and more time to finish healing. There are new pics of her here and new pics of her healing progress here.

Cinnabar is back at our main facility as he needed to have his teeth looked at. He's all caught up again and just waiting for his "someone" to come along and fall in love.

Epic, Hula and Willow are having fun at their foster homes. Willow had her day in the spotlight at the LMQHA Horseman's Bazaar. She was a wonderful ambassador in our booth and even made the Langely newspaper!

It looks as though Mac is going to be Adopted and heading over to the Island. He's going to love his new home!

AND, we had two new arrivals yesterday! Chaka and Honeysuckle have joined us here. Chaka will be gelded tomorrow and they'll both be brought up to date on everything. They are nice little AMHA horses and it shouldn't take long for them to find their new families.

Hello March!

Well... our quiet spell has ended! We've had four new arrivals in the past week. Maria was soon joined by Bilbo and Pippin, with Frodo as the surprise addition that day as well. Maria was very healthy and came from a loving home. They just wanted us to find her a great new home. We just happened to have someone on the waiting list who was waiting for just such a Mini as Maria, and it was a complete bonus that she was black as night and matched the current set! She's gone to live with Jet and his Friesian buddy!

To see a fun video of the Hobbitses... click here.

So... let's shuffle through everyone else... Dash is STILL pregnant. However, her udder has kickstarted into gear, so I do feel that she will foal in 2 - 4 weeks. LOL

Twilight and Applejack are ever larger and I'm starting to keep a closer eye on them as well.

Magpie had her teeth and eyes taken care of and I'm sure she's feeling much better now. Her teeth were horrible and her eyes are now staying much clearer after being treated. I don't know if it's a long-term solution, but we'll work on them again in a while. Her leg wounds are absolutely spiffy! We are within days of the third smallest wound being completely closed. The unwrapped wound is shrinking at a tremendous rate with the vet scraping the excess granulation tissue every other week. The final large wound over the tendons on the back of the wrapped leg is looking terrific! Everything is covered with granulation tissue and the wound is shrinking relatively quickly as well. I think she will be running free by late spring! I can't wait to see the day!

Cinnabar is getting some TLC at his foster home. Here is the promised video.

Epic, Mac, Starbright, Hula and Willow are chillaxin' at their foster homes as well. Fluttershy has been Adopted and is leaving for her new home on Thursday! She'll be in the same town as her sister Pinkie Pie!

... aaaand February is just about over!

WOW - just took a look and realized that I haven't posted since February 1st. It's been a whirlwind month!

Let's see...

Dash is STILL pregnant! LOL I am very used to hearing my alarm at various points in the night, rolling over to blearily peer at my iPad and then dropping right back into my dreams. Two months and counting... she's lucky she's cute! LOL Kristie got some beautiful new photos of her, click here to check them out.

Twilight Sparkle and Applejack are awaiting their turns in the limelight. They are both doing very well, just hanging out and getting healthy.

Magpie is doing just super! All of the wounds now have complete coverage with granulation tissue. The skin is still closing, but there are no more exposed innards that just never should have seen the light of day! We can now finally work on her teeth and eyes, which will be a big relief! You can see the latest photos of her healing progress if you click here.

Legend has been Adopted! He actually took Cinnabar's place at that terrific home. Cinnabar has returned to us here. He just couldn't handle the pushy advances of the mare he was supposed to befriend. Legend is settling in very well and should do great in that relationship. I will be putting a video of Cinnabar together very shortly, so keep an eye on his profile on the "Available" page for the link.

Epic is still with us. His foster family moved to Alberta and unfortunately, the property was just not Mini ready.

Mac did very well at the Jonathan Field clinic. He's a very smart little guy with tons of energy. Mac is now up for Adoption and I hope to see him go to a fun-loving, interesting home!

Fluttershy is still hanging around as well. I am so surprised that nobody has snapped her up! Maybe it's because she is a plain chestnut, but under all that fuzz she is a BEAUTIFUL girl!

Starbright is up for Adoption finally. She's still recovering from her years, or lifetime really, of improper care... but she's well on her way. She is quite the little character and whoever Adopts her will always be entertained! LOL

Hula is doing tremendously well. She is now a bright-eyed and sweet little mare - a complete turnaround from the sickly, grumpy girl who arrived here over a year ago. She is just a doll.

Willow has also made a fantastic recovery. She's been getting massage and chiropractic help and can now run and play! She will need to have an appointment a few times a year to maintain, but she is such an absolute sweetheart... completely worth it! Here is a photo of her in her foster home, apparently the big horses sent her in to take a look at what was going on! LOL

It's February!

Hiya!

Well... January is done! A month of freezing temperatures, piles of snow, and many hours of watching Dash through the night! It was cold, it was tiring - but we've survived! LOL

I had mentioned that the horses loved the snow... here is a video clip of them having some fun!

Magpie is doing very well. I took some new pictures on Monday, you can click here to see her progress. The vet has us down to every three days now for the bandage changes. It's been nearly two months, and it looks like two, three or more to go. She is a real trooper though.

It looks like Epic may be Adopted by his foster family! He just fits right in there!

Mac's surgery went very well. He was, as suspected, an abdominal crypt. There was no way that was coming out without the more extensive surgery. He is healing up well and hopes to make an appearance at the Jonathan Field Clinic on the 18th!

Legend has returned from his foster home, as I want to take him as my partner in the Jonathan Field Clinic. I am hoping to get through some of his fear and get some good pointers at the Clinic on how to deal with abused horses. Time and TLC are greatly helped by knowledgeable handling when it comes to the abuse cases. I am hoping to improve my skills in this area. We always seem to have some each year that are just terrified and I want to help them swiftly and confidently.

It seems as though Dash and her foal have got a good home lined up. They won't go anywhere until the baby is old enough to travel safely, but they've got a terrific place waiting for them! Now there are even more folks addicted to the Dash-Cam, and with good reason!

Please check out our "LOVE 14" campaign! Thank you all for your support!

LOL... here are a couple of pictures of Rarity from her Adopter. She wanted to know exactly what kind of Mini I had sent her... she was sure she remembered me guaranteeing that she would stay white! ROFLOL

Upon delivery...

... and the next day! LOL

ZZZZzzzzzzzzzz....

Hiya!

Sorry I haven't written much lately... I am sleepy! LOL I have the "even-hours" shift to check on Dash. :D

It has been a CRAZY week weather-wise! We had an incredible amount of snow and insane winds! The drifts were waist high in some places and it got down to minus 25. We usually don't even go below zero! The horses loved it though. They kept running through the snow like they were in some kind of sappy, slow motion advertisement on TV! LOL

Now, the snow has started to melt and we'll be dealing with slush for a few days. Thanks to my awesome volunteers today though, it won't be as bad as I had feared. We got a lot of the accumulated mess cleaned up and chipped the ice out of the swail so that once it starts raining, it has somewhere to go!

So, on to the list!

Magpie is doing awesome! The vet has us changing the bandages every other day now - which is terrific! She still has her great attitude toward it all - she's just a real trooper.

Ajax and Bobbysox are indeed Adopted! Their family decided that they can make it work at the facility, even if they can't share a space, but we're still very hopeful that they'll be a good match. Ajax is hanging out here until there is space at Bobbysox's current barn. They'll go home in the Spring from there, once their new barn is complete.

Hmmm.... I am watching Dash as I'm typing this and she is acting weird. She started bagging up yesterday, so it could be anytime! Hmmm....

Anyhoo, on with the list! Willow is doing terrific! She is getting tons of love, attention and some physical therapy - and it shows! She can run!

Legend has a new BFF at his foster home. There is a sweet little girl there who spends tons of time working with him. It is just magical to see! Epic and Hula are doing well too... just doing what they do.

Duchess has been Adopted by her foster family! Duke has been Adopted and is now on Vancouver Island. Friday has been Adopted by his driving trainer and is going to have a good year of training! I can't wait to see him competing! Starbright is revealing quite the personality and spunk. I am hoping her health will be improved enough by sometime in February to go up for Adoption. She's a funny old gal! LOL

Rarity and Pinkie Pie have been Adopted. Rarity will be going to live with Candy and Shindig, while Pie is going to live with Fiction! Looks like they'll be leaving on their journey to the Island at the end of next week.

Mac is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday. Turns out he is likely a cryptorchid. So it is a bit more complex of a surgery than normal. We're setting up an operating table in the shop. Should be interesting - he's our first crypt out of nearly 50 surgeries!

Applejack, Twilight and little Fluttershy are doing great. They have bright eyes and lots of energy. The fillies are nearly weaned, so that should give Applejack and Twilight a bit of a break until they foal out again in the Spring. Dash should foal within the next two weeks... and as I watch her out of the corner of my eye... I think it may be sooner rather than later!

Shy and Pie!

Happy New Year!

Well... what a whirlwind couple of weeks it has been! Busy, busy, busy!

At the very end of the year, Ajax arrived. We then had to transport most of the current gang to Foster Homes because on New Year's day, we have 7 new arrivals! So, I'll go through the list of horses... we're up to 18 again I believe.

Magpie - she is doing phenominally well! The vet has cut out the dead tendon over the exposed bone, because it's not exposed anymore! The tissue from the other side has grown under the flap and the bone is now covered! The smallest of the four wounds is completely closed now, with another wound well on it's way. It's just the exposed tendon on the back of her right hind that is slow going. That is just due to the fact that the tendon slides with every step. It all looks as healthy as it could be though. It just takes time.

Ajax - is a very nice guy! We had him gelded and he's just hanging out and healing. Once he has healed up, he will be going to Bobbysox's foster home to see if they get along. If everything pans out well, then both boys will be Adopted together! Here's hoping!

Rhapsody is now Adopted by his awesome foster-mom, Tara. That was a secret I had to keep for a LONG time so that her mom could surprise her on Christmas morning! So awesome! Baron, Lulu and Fable are all at their new homes as well, living it up!

Willow, Legend, Epic, Duke, Duchess, Hula, Bobbysox, Starbright and Friday are still doing what they do at their foster homes. They are all doing very well.

That leaves us with Magpie, Ajax and Mulligan here along with the new herd! My daughter has put her foot down and claimed naming rights. She has never had the opportunity to name incoming Minis and she just couldn't pass up the fact that there were six girls and her favourite TV show has six main characters. So, they are now named after the My Little Ponies! LOL

"Rarity" "Twilight Sparkle" "Rainbow Dash" "Pinkie Pie" "Fluttershy" "Applejack"

There is also a boy who came with them, Rarity's two year old colt, who our friend Shawn named after one of the boy MLP's. So, he is now "Big Macintosh". LOL

So, it turns out that Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle and Applejack are all in foal. Dash is due anytime and the other two should make an appearance later in the Spring. Here's a picture of Karen (one of our awesome volunteers) with Dash and others from the MLP herd.

'Tis the Season!

Hi folks!

Well, I must say, I am simply overwhelmed by the response to Mulligan's letter to Santa, and the support for Magpie. Each time I open the mailbox, it is full of letters for Mulligan and packages of bandages for Magpie! Not to mention all of the people who have stopped by with items that the Minis need! Thank you to everyone who has the Minis in their hearts this holiday season! You ALL have made an incredible difference! There's no stopping us in 2012!

Let's see... what's been going on?

Well, here is a video of Lulu tearing up the Paddocks in one of her playful moments. She gets quite a few of these "moments"! LOL - we're going to miss her zest for life, that's for sure! She's scheduled to go home with Fable at the end of the month. Fable is recovering well from his gelding surgery and is getting braver every day.

Baron is doing very well and is all ready to go home on Boxing Day. His new family just can't wait!

Bobbysox has been getting visits from some prospective Adopters. They have been working with him at his Foster Home and things are going pretty good. He is an interesting guy, so we want to be sure of a good fit before he goes anywhere. LOL

Hula, Willow, Starbright, Rhapsody, Friday and Duchess are all doing well in their Foster Homes.

Here's Willow all snuggled in with her buddy.

And here's Starbright. She is doing just fabulous! Packing on the pounds and coming to life!

Magpie is doing really well! The vet will be out again after Christmas for another check. She is alert, eating well and healing at an amazing rate!

Legend, Epic and Duke are doing great too. I let the whole gang, except Magpie, mingle when I'm out doing chores. The three big boys love to wrestle! Duke has lost his stallion ego and loves to have fun now. I let Lulu in with the gang for the first time yesterday and he didn't even bat an eye at there being a mare in the mix... even when she was running around like a lunatic and bumping right into him! LOL

Here's Epic having a nap.

Mingling

Hiya! Okay... here we go. First off, I just have to say how amazed and thankful I am for the response of our supporters regarding Magpie and Meadowlark. I truly appreciate all of the calls, emails and Facebook messages offering condolences for Meadowlark. She will have a great legacy here with all of the donations and new supporters that her day with us has inspired.

Magpie is doing very well! Here is a photo of her relaxing in the sunshine. The vet is very pleased with how the wounds look and we are trucking along with the daily bandaging and meds etc. Again - WOW - what an amazing response with donations of bandaging materials and funds for her vet bills! She's got nothing to worry about... other than that her socks don't match! :D

Let's see... what's going on with everyone else?

Myth has been Adopted and is in her new home on the Island. She is living it up with a huge space to run and a new Mini friend! Fiction has also been Adopted and will be going to the Island as well, tomorrow morning.

The fostered horses, Bobbysox, Rhapsody, Hula, Willow, Starbright, Duchess and Friday are doing what they do. Willow had a therapy session and should be feeling much better now that more things are where they should be. I look forward to seeing her progress as she gains strength and condition. I went and visited Hula and she is doing terrific - what a cute pair she makes with her 17+ hand high buddy! LOL

Legend has taken a real shine to the babies and has assigned himself as their protector. Lulu loves to play, but she's not allowed near the colts if they are hanging with Uncle Legend. Baron loves to tussle with her though and that whole gang is spending their days together now. Epic and Duke are nearly ready to mingle with the gang, but I will remove Lulu from the picture when those boys come out to play. Duke is still too fresh to chill out if there's a mare around. So, we'll see how things go this next week. We're just loving the sunshine and good times!

Here is a cute little video of some of the mingling this week. The first part is right when I let Legend in with the babies - he just went right to them.

Magpie and Meadowlark

There are lots of updates to share with you, but I am not feeling up to a big post today. One bright patch - Jet is Adopted and should be home by now. I look forward to seeing the pictures of him there as he's to be a "mini-me" for a Friesian!

However, today was a sad one. We had two new arrivals yesterday. One did not make it and the other is not faring so well, though we are hopeful she will recover. You can read about them in the "Rehabilitation" section for now, and I will write more about it soon.

Here is a link to a video shot today... but please be warned - there is graphic content of injuries... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPsqsENOhqk

Rest in peace Meadowlark.

Fable & Fiction, Epic, Myth and Legend arrived today! It was too dark to get a really good look at them, but they all seem very sweet. Fable and Fiction are likely half-brothers and are a very cute pair. They are both chestnut weanlings, but Fiction has a blaze and Fable is a tiny bit tinier. Epic came with them. He is a very sweet gelding - easy to handle so far! Legend is a silver dapple gelding and Myth is a little silver bay mare. These two travelled very nicely too and were well behaved. We'll get some pictures in the next few days as they settle in and have their appointments.

In other news... Jigsaw, Cruz and Cinnabar were all Adopted!

Bobbysox, Rhapsody, Hula, Willow, Jet, Starbright and now Duchess are all in Foster Homes and doing great! Friday has returned to us and is in driving training with Kay Veinotte. He is doing wonderful there!

Duke and Baron are settling in here at our main facility. Lulu is still here as well, but has some strong interest. Here's hoping an Adoption will go through for her real soon!

Here is a picture of Duchess Dolly at her Foster Home...

Liking the Likers!

Well, we've hit 1000 "likers" on our Facebook page! I think that we'll have our 100th horse in no time as well, seeing as # 83 - #86 arrived in the last two days. It has been a phenomenal year. As much as it pains me to see so many Minis needing our help... it is pretty cool that there are that many kind folks taking them into their lives as Adopters as well!

So, here's the roll call...

Tuffi and Blizzard are ADOPTED! This pair of special Minis finally found their family, and what a great bunch of people they are! They are ready and willing to take on the special care of these cuties!

Bobbysox, Rhapsody and Hula are still hanging out at their Foster Homes. Jet has now gone to a Foster Home as well with our friend Margaret who does the massage therapy for our herd. He will get plenty of purposeful exercise and massage, now that he actually has muscles to work with!

We had a new arrival about a week ago, Willow, who we took to a Foster Home today as well. Willow has severe lateral luxated patella, as well as significant rotation of her coffin bones. She will be getting plenty of walks to strengthen her legs to see if it helps her hind end, as well as physical therapy. Luckily, she is still very sound in the front. She is a complete sweetheart and once she has been assessed, she will be available to a home with the right kind of setup for her.

Here she is enjoying the sunshine the other day...

As for the previous newbies... Cruz's Adoption is pending! Lulu has some strong interest and is now up for Adoption. She is now hanging out with Cinnabar and they are getting along great. Cinnabar has done a complete turnaround in attitude. He is now a very mellow fellow! And, little Starbright is going to her Foster Home on Tuesday. She will remain there into the new year as she puts on weight. She has already lost that hard edge since her teeth were done and she is now able to chew.

Here is a picture of Cruz on that same sunny day...

So, that brings me to our FOUR new, new arrivals.

There is the two year old bay pinto gelding that we are having a naming contest for on our Facebook page. He seems very sweet... though he does nip. LOL

Here he is...

He's got a Mini-Me who arrived today... a yearling bay pinto colt we've named Baron.

Here he is with his sire, Duke (a 20 year old stallion), who came with him...

And lastly is Baron's dam, Duchess, a 22 year old mare. These four will be seeing the vet tomorrow and we'll see what's what with them.
