Meadowlark was put down on December 5th, 2011.
Meadowlark's hind leg was dangling from the pelvis. Some sort of trauma, long ago, shattered the joint from leg to hip or popped the bone out of the socket. Her entire leg was fused. That was not the main issue.
Her front feet were completely misshapen. The coffin bone was bulging through the hoof wall on one foot and surely equally rotated on the other.
Over time, she had apparently learned to find objects to prop her hind leg up on.
It was the vet and farrier's opinions that nothing could be done to lessen her pain, or give her any quality of life, so we put her down that day.
Rest in peace Meadowlark.
